As already mentioned, the resonance frequency giving the signal in NMR, and indicating the types of protons, is shown on the x axis by δ (delta). The 0 ppm is a reference point where the protons of tetramethylsilane, (CH3) 4 Si, also called TMS give signal. It forms a dianion which is a 16 p -electron (4n) system. In the nmr spectrum of the dianion, the innermost methylene protons (red) give an nmr signal at +22.2 ppm, the adjacent methylene protons (blue) give a signal at +12.6 ppm, and the methyl protons (green) a signal at +5.6 ppm.

For example, in one of my series there are 4 of such protons. Sometimes all 4 show but at different ppm; or at times few or all of them do not show. How to solve this dilemma? When we instruct the instrument to integrate the areas under the two signals, we find that the area under the peak at 2.6 ppm is 1.5 times greater than the area under the peak at 7.4 ppm. The ratio 1.5 to 1 is of course the same as the ratio 6 to 4. 7.33 ppm.
